Clinical biochemistry isn't just about remembering reference ranges and facts. It's about understanding what results mean for the patient in front of you.
That's particularly important when preparing for the course work, exam revision or UK Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA). The MLA assesses the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for UK medical practice, with clinical biochemistry specifically included within its areas of professional knowledge.
Each card starts with a clinical case and challenges you with three progressive questions. Identify abnormalities, interpret results, understand the underlying mechanisms and apply your knowledge to the clinical situation.
The result? Less passive reading. More active clinical thinking - helping you build the knowledge and reasoning you need for medical school, or the UKMLA and clinical practice.
Preparing for the UKMLA requires more than memorising facts. You need to recognise clinical presentations, interpret investigations and apply your knowledge.
Biochemistry Essentials for Clinical Practice uses case-based questions and graded levels designed to support this style of learning - making it a useful revision resource from the early years of medical school through to finals and UKMLA preparation.

Explore ZeST for TeachingI graduated from the University of Bristol with distinction, finishing first in my medical finals, alongside a first-class intercalated degree in neuroscience.
After foundation training in London, I worked in Australia as an ICU and medical registrar before returning to the UK to begin anaesthetic training.
In 2019, I had a brainstem stroke. I was no longer able to continue in anaesthetics, and my career took a different direction - into research, chemical pathology and medical education.
Iām also dyslexic, and these cards reflect the way I learn best: clinical, visual, concise and focused on the facts that matter.
Rather than pages of textbook content, each card uses a clinical case, focused questions, diagrams and clear explanations to help you test your knowledge and understand the reasoning behind it.
I hope they help you learn too.
